Career
Kidman debuted on screen at the age of 16 in a 1983 adaptation of the Australian holiday favorite Bush Christmas. She earned a supporting part in the television series Five Mile Creek before the end of that year. After learning that her mother had breast cancer in 1984, Kidman temporarily stopped her acting career to study massage therapy in order to assist her mother with physical therapy.
She started to become well-known during this decade after starring in a number of Australian movies, including the romantic comedy Windrider (1986) and the action comedy BMX Bandits (1983). She had appearances in a number of Australian television shows for the remainder of the 1980s, including the 1987 miniseries Vietnam, for which she received her first Australian Film Institute Award.
A second Australian Film Institute Award was given to Kidman for her role in the 1988 film Emerald City, which was based on the play of the same name. She later costarred with Sam Neill in the 1989 thriller Dead Calm as Rae Ingram, a naval officer’s wife who is threatened by Billy Zane’s character, a castaway at sea.
It turned out to be her breakout performance and one of the first movies for which she received widespread acclaim. Variety made the following observation on her performance: “Kidman is excellent throughout the film.” She infuses Rae with genuine determination and vitality.
In the 1995 superhero movie Batman Forever, Kidman portrayed Dr. Chase Meridian, the damsel in distress, against Val Kilmer as the title character. She played the murdering newscaster Suzanne Stone in Gus Van Sant’s highly regarded dark comedy To Die For that same year.
Mick LaSalle of the San Francisco Chronicle commented on her performance, saying, “[she] brings layers of meaning, intention, and impulse to the role.” As she does throughout the movie, Kidman tells her story in close-up, allowing you to observe the calculations, the processes, and the obvious attempts at charm that manage to be delightful.
Kidman is still a practicing Catholic who was raised in a Catholic home. In North Sydney, she went to the Mary Mackillop Memorial Chapel and Museum. Kidman told Entertainment Weekly that the source material had been “watered down a little” after Catholic officials criticised her for playing an anti-Catholic character in The Golden Compass.
She also stated that her religious convictions would prohibit her from appearing in a movie if she felt it was anti-Catholic. She has been reluctant to talk about Scientology since she and Tom Cruise got divorced.
