Bandt attended his first protest in high school, which was against a nuclear-powered ship visiting Fremantle. From 1987 to 1989, when he was in his midteens, he belonged to the Australian Labor Party (ALP). Later, Bandt blamed the Higher Education Contributions Scheme for his departure from the party, claiming that Hawke and Keating had eliminated free universities. According to Bandt, the shift began driving up the cost of schooling and causing debt for many.
Bandt was a student activist and a member of the Left Alliance at Murdoch University. He said that Leon Trotsky’s ideas inspired him while he was a student. As president of the student union, he actively advocated for free education and increased living expenses for students.
