Career
In things Here Are Different, Sobule’s debut album, released in 1990. Pop icon Todd Rundgren produced the record, but it didn’t sell. British New Wave rocker Joe Jackson, for whom she opened in 1991, created a follow-up record during this time, but Sobule was fired from her label, and the second record was never made. Sobule didn’t sign another recording deal for five years.
Her 1995 album Jill Sobule made Sobule a part of a successful female singer-songwriter trend in the mid-1990s, which also featured musicians like Alanis Morissette, Lisa Loeb, and Juliana Hatfield. A humorous music video featuring beefcake model Fabio Lanzoni helped Sobule’s most well-known song, “I Kissed a Girl,” become an unusual radio hit. The tale-song tells the story of a lesbian flirtation between two suburban girlfriends.

The song “Supermodel” (sample lyric: “I didn’t eat yesterday… and I’m not gonna eat today… and I’m not gonna eat tomorrow… ‘Cause I’m gonna be a supermodel”) became well-known after it was featured in the popular teen comedy Clueless in 1995. It managed to both mock and celebrate American adolescent lifestyles.
Pink Pearl, released in 2000, is arguably Sobule’s most distinctive compilation. Three female character studies serve as its mainstays: “Lucy at the Gym,” which centers on an anorexic exercise addict; “Claire,” which centers on an elderly lesbian aviator who is dying of Alzheimer’s disease; and “Mary Kay,” which centers on the infamous real-life schoolteacher Mary Kay Letourneau, who became pregnant and was imprisoned after committing the statutory rape of a 13-year-old male student, whom she married when he was old enough to give consent.
In October 2022, Sobule’s semi-autobiographical musical “F*CK7thGrade” debuted and ran for a number of performances at the Wild Project theater in New York. It received a nomination for an Outstanding Musical Drama Desk Award in 2023. According to a review in the New York Times, the play was “for the nerds who grew up to be the cool people.”
Sobule served as the Bayard Rustin Center for Social Justice’s musician-in-residence, an LGBTQIA community center, starting in 2020.
