Career
In 2004–05, Gagner was a member of the Greater Toronto Hockey League (GTHL) Toronto Marlboros, playing midget hockey. With 173 points, he received the Buck Houle Award, a Marlboros team honor bestowed for exceptional leadership and on-ice play.
He made his junior debut that same season, playing in 13 games and scoring 15 points for the OPJHL’s Milton Icehawks. His minor hockey career was coached by his father. He played with the United States Hockey League (USHL) Sioux City Musketeers in 2005–06, where he finished second in club scoring with 46 points in 56 games.
The Edmonton Oilers selected Gagner sixth overall in the first round of the 2007 NHL entry draft. He then agreed to a three-year, entry-level deal with the Oilers on October 1, 2007. On October 4, he participated in his first NHL game, helping defenseman Tom Gilbert score a goal in a 3–2 shootout victory over the San Jose Sharks. He also collected his first NHL point. Gagner’s first NHL goal came on October 20 against the Calgary Flames’ Miikka Kiprusoff.
In an 8-1 victory over the Colorado Avalanche on March 19, 2009, Gagner got his first NHL hat-trick and contributed an assist for a four-point game in the next season, 2008–09. After 76 games, he concluded his sophomore season with 16 goals and 41 points. He scored 41 points and 42 points in the next two campaigns.

Gagner was chosen to play for Canada in the 2024 Spengler Cup in Davos, Switzerland, in December of that year. In both of Canada’s group stage matches, Gagner assisted in the first game against the tournament’s hosts, HC Davos, and then played in their semifinal defeat to the Straubing Tigers.
