Career

Walls attended Coburg High School while growing up in Brunswick, Victoria. Like his mother, he first backed Essendon, but because Brunswick was then in Carlton’s recruitment zone, he ended up at Carlton. At the age of sixteen, he made his senior VFL debut with the Carlton Football Club on April 22, 1967, against Hawthorn at Princes Park after being signed from Coburg Amateurs. When his first kick resulted in a goal, it was a harbinger of things to come. With Carlton, Walls participated in three premierships in 1968, 1970, and 1972.

In a brilliant performance against bitter rivals Richmond, he kicked six goals to win Man of the Match in the 1972 VFL Grand Final. Walls did not receive the Norm Smith Medal since it was not given out until the 1979 VFL Grand Final. He scored 367 goals in 218 games for Carlton before Fitzroy cleared him halfway through the 1978 campaign.

In 1981, Walls succeeded Bill Stephen as senior coach of the Fitzroy after Walls retired from playing. After the club’s poor 1980 season, Walls’ first assignment was to purge the team of older players who were obviously “past it.” Walls led the Lions to their finest period since winning a premiership in 1944. Between 1981 and 1985, Walls coached Fitzroy Football Club in 115 games (60 victories, 54 defeats, and 1 draw).

1984 was a poor year at first because of the club’s injuries and perceived lack of depth, but they made a tremendous comeback and advanced to the five after the final round before Collingwood destroyed them. In addition to additional injuries, the Lions’ financial situation in 1985 threatened their future, dropping them to ninth place with just seven victories and two losses to last-place St Kilda.

In a mutually announced deal between Fitzroy Football Club and Carlton Football Club to switch senior coaches, Walls then transferred to his old club, Carlton, in exchange for David Parkin. David Parkin then took Walls’ place as senior coach of Fitzroy Football Club.

In 1998, he started writing columns for Melbourne’s The Age , and he retired at the end of the 2018 season. He began making unique remarks during AFL games when he joined the Seven Network in 1998 . Later, in 2001, he took Malcolm Blight’s place on Talking Footy, a football debate show.
