Frost was chosen in the fourth round, 81st overall, of the 2015 Ontario Hockey League (OHL) Priority Selection draft by the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds. Frost had no intention of playing for the team that season, but the Greyhounds were left without a center when the Vancouver Canucks decided to keep Jared McCann, so they signed Frost to replace McCann.
Coach Drew Bannister spent Frost’s first season concentrating on developing him into a two-way forward because Frost was only interested in scoring goals during his first season of junior ice hockey.
Frost played 65 games as a rookie in the 2015–16 OHL season, recording seven goals and 20 assists. He scored eight points in 11 playoff games the next season and finished with 20 goals and 42 assists in 67 games. Playing on the same line as Zachary Senyshyn for the majority of that period taught Frost how to be a playmaker, creating scoring opportunities for his teammate.
Frost was chosen to represent Canada at the 2019 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships after being passed over in 2018. He was named Player of the Game after recording a hat-trick and two assists in Canada’s 14–0 victory over Denmark in the preliminary rounds. Instead of playing at his typical centre position during the competition, Frost played on the wing and finished with four goals and four assists in five games.
