Career
As the first Australian player to join the National Basketball League’s (NBL) Next Stars program, which aims to develop NBA draft prospects, Giddey signed with the Adelaide 36ers on March 12, 2020. Arizona was among the NCAA Division I schools that Giddey declined offers from.
He became the youngest Australian in NBL history to earn a triple-double on April 26, 2021, when he scored 12 points, grabbed 10 rebounds, and dished out 10 assists in a 93-77 loss to the New Zealand Breakers. He became the first Australian ever to score a triple-double in back-to-back games on May 1st when the 36ers defeated the Brisbane Bullets 101-79, finishing with 15 points, 13 assists, and 11 rebounds. In a 97-88 victory over the Sydney Kings in overtime on May 9, he recorded his third triple-double with 11 points, 12 assists, and 10 rebounds.
In 28 games, Giddey averaged 10.9 points, 7.3 rebounds, and a league-high 7.6 assists per game before being cut from the active roster on May 17 to prepare for the 2021 NBA draft. He won the NBL Rookie of the Year award.
Giddey debuted for the Australian national basketball team on February 23, 2020, as part of their 2021 FIBA Asia Cup qualification. He helped Australia overcome Hong Kong 115–52 with 11 points, 6 assists, and 3 rebounds in 11 minutes. Since Ben Simmons in 2013, Giddey was the youngest player for the senior squad.
