Career
To play spring football with the Bulldogs, Carr enrolled as an early-entry freshman for the spring semester of 2009 at Fresno State, where his brother David was also a quarterback. As late as mid-July, Carr, a true freshman, was “in the mix” for the starting quarterback position, according to Fresno State head coach Pat Hill.
But Hill declared junior Ryan Colburn would start in place of Carr just days before the 2009 season started in September. As a freshman, Carr saw minimal play in five games.
Colburn remained the starting quarterback for the Bulldogs into 2010. Carr became Fresno State’s starting quarterback in the fall of 2011 after redshirting his 2010 campaign.
Carr deserved the chance to start for the Bulldogs in 2011 during their 4–9 campaign. In the Bulldogs’ season-opening defeat to California, he debuted as a starter. Carr had a spectacular performance in a victory over Idaho three weeks later, recording 371 passing yards, five touchdowns, and two interceptions. He recorded a season-high 391 throwing yards and three touchdowns in a loss to New Mexico State on November 12, six games later. Carr recorded 3,544 throwing yards, 26 touchdowns, and nine interceptions during the 2011 campaign. He was among the Western Athletic Conference’s passing leaders in many areas.
Tim DeRuyter was Carr’s new head coach going into the season, taking Pat Hill’s place after he was fired. In 2012, Carr helped guide the Bulldogs to a notable turnaround, going 9–4. Coming off a redshirt at the start of the season, Davante Adams quickly established himself as a dependable target for Carr.

Carr completed 19 of 23 passes for 200 yards and three touchdowns in the Saints’ first game against the Panthers, demonstrating his effectiveness. The Saints won 47–10, and his passer rating of 142.5 was the second-highest of his career. In Week 2, the Saints defeated the Cowboys 44–19 on the road after Carr completed 11 of 16 throws for 243 yards and guided the offence to touchdowns in the opening six drives of the game.
Carr was under pressure on over half of his dropbacks in Week 5’s Monday Night Football game against the Chiefs. He ultimately left the game midway through the fourth quarter due to an oblique injury, and the Saints lost 26–13.
