Career
McAvoy participated with the New York Rangers minor ice hockey team in the 2010 Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament. McAvoy committed to Boston University’s collegiate hockey program in August 2013.
For two seasons, McAvoy was a member of the United States Hockey League’s USA Hockey National Team Development Program. BU coach David Quinn partnered McAvoy with standout BU defenseman and future NHL player Matt Grzelcyk for the 2015–16 NCAA men’s ice hockey season.
Grzelcyk was already chosen by the Boston Bruins as a third-round 2012 NHL Entry Draft pick. At the 2015 IIHF World U18 Championships, McAvoy was a member of the squad that took home the gold medal. Additionally, he played for the U-20 squad that won a bronze at the 2016 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships.
McAvoy joined the Providence Bruins, the Bruins’ AHL affiliate, for an amateur tryout on March 29, 2017, capping his collegiate hockey career. McAvoy agreed to an entry-level NHL contract on April 10.
On April 12, 2017, McAvoy played his first game, defeating the Ottawa Senators 2–1 in the playoffs. He had the second-most ice time on the club despite having no prior NHL experience. McAvoy recorded three assists in six games during a period when four of their top six defenders were sidelined. By mid-June 2017, Bruins veteran and Hall of Fame defenseman Bobby Orr had praised McAvoy’s talent and work ethic for excelling in the NHL after the Bruins’ first-round playoff loss to the Ottawa Senators.
