Career
Marsden decided to write for teens while working as an English teacher at the elite Geelong Grammar School’s Timbertop campus, motivated by his displeasure with his pupils’ apathy toward reading, or the observation that youngsters simply weren’t reading anymore.
Marsden wrote So Much to Tell You in three weeks and released it in 1987. The book sold record numbers and won multiple prizes, including “Book of the Year” from Australia’s Children’s Book Council.
Marsden wrote six more books in the five years since So Much To Tell You was published. Notable works from this period include Out of Time, which was nominated by the CBCA as a notable book for older readers, Letters From the Inside, and a sequel to So Much to Tell You called Take My Word For It, both of which were shortlisted for the CBCA’s Children’s Book of the Year: Older Readers.
Letters From the Inside won awards from The Horn Book Magazine and the American Library Association after it was published in the United States. American novelist Robert Cormier called the work “unforgettable” and praised John Marsden as a “major writer deserving of worldwide acclaim”.
Death Detail
