Career

Wendt discovered The Second City soon after college and graduated in 1975. He was persuaded to join after a viewing, and he arrived on time for his first day of work at 11:30 a.m. as directed. After saying “Welcome to the theater, kid” and handing him a broom, the woman who worked there gave him his first job in show business: sweeping the floors.  His eventual wife, Bernadette Birkett, who portrayed Cliff’s Halloween date in the third season of Cheers and subsequently provided the voice of Norm’s never-seen wife, Vera, was also met in Second City, a Chicago neighborhood.

Wendt played Norm Peterson in all 275 Cheers episodes from 1982 to 1993. Wendt received six nominations for the Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series Primetime Emmy Award for his role on Cheers. Additionally, he appeared in an episode of Wings, an episode of Frasier, another Cheers spin-off, and the brief spin-off The Tortellis. In each episode, Wendt, in the role of Norm, made a big show of coming to the Cheers bar. “Norm!” would be yelled at him, and he would snicker as he made his way to his barstool. The show’s high point was this routine business. Other recurring gags were disparaging remarks about the character’s miserable life and his wife, Vera.

After his popularity on Cheers, Wendt starred in the brief series The George Wendt Show, which was based on the NPR radio program Car Talk and portrayed him as a garage mechanic with a radio show. In 1995, The George Wendt Show ran from March to April. In the 1995 episode Strange Bedfellows, Wendt played a thoroughbred horse owner, and in one of the final episodes of the television series Columbo, she played the killer. Wendt played himself on Seinfeld and played Norm Peterson again in the Frasier episode “Cheerful Goodbyes,” two Family Guy episodes “Road to Rupert” and “Three Kings,” and the Simpsons episode “Fear of Flying.”

Wendt costarred with Rudy Ray Moore (of “Dolemite” fame) and Mike Watt of The Minutemen as a celebrity fisherman in the music video for Cobra Verde’s “Riot Industry” in 2003. In 2001, he made multiple appearances as the boss of the title character in ABC’s Sabrina, the Teenage Witch. In 2004, he also hosted the A&E reality series House of Dreams. Wendt returned to television in January 2006, this time as a member of the Modern Men cast.
