In 1985, Geno Auriemma joined the institution and started coaching. There had only ever been one winning season for the team before he came to the institution. Geno was appointed with the intention of better-directing women’s sports. The university gained notoriety quite fast after he was hired.
The team’s only defeat during Auriemma’s coaching season came in the inaugural season, with a score of 12–15. Following that, the team Huskies celebrated their first-ever 20-win campaign, their first-ever trip to the NCAA Tournament, and their first-ever conference championship.
