Career
He started creating music in 1948 while working on cattle farms around Rockhampton. Morgan’s lyrics contain Australian vernacular such as sheilas, drongos, dills, and geezers. He was found through Australia’s Amateur Hour, a radio talent contest, when he performed his song “The Sheik of Scrubby Creek” and advanced to the national finals. By November 1952, he had recorded that song alongside “You Can Keep Your Wimmln and I’ll Stick to My Beer”.
He signed with Regal Zonophone Records (a subsidiary of EMI), which released his debut single, “The Sheik of Scrubby Creek” in December. He was described as a “Queensland hillbilly” with a “deadpan, bumpkin style”. He also completed national service with the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) at Amberley Base.
Throughout his career, Morgan toured widely, performing with the Slim Dusty Show, the All Star Western Show, and the Chad Morgan Show. He released 18 studio albums and had regular live performances. He was inducted into the Australian Roll of Honour at the 1987 Country Music Awards of Australia, and received an OAM on Australia Day (January 26, 2004) for “service to country music.”
Morgan appeared in Newsfront (1978) and Dimboola (1979). In the previous film, he appeared as “Redex singer”. In the latter film, he portrays Bayonet with “the full force of his unusual personality… [and] the lustre of his success in the entertainment world.”
