Marchand was chosen 24th overall by the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) Moncton Wildcats in the 2004 QMJHL entry draft. He was named the team’s Rookie of the Year after scoring 29 goals for Moncton during his draft year. Ted Nolan, who took over as head coach of Moncton shortly before the 2005–06 QMJHL season, immediately embraced Marchand’s “drive and determination” and gave the skater a significant position on the squad. Marchand led Moncton to a President’s Cup title and the Memorial Cup finals with an additional five goals and 14 assists in 20 playoff games while scoring 29 goals and 66 points in 68 regular season games under this new coaching scheme.
In the end, the Quebec Remparts defeated the Wildcats in the championship game. The NHL’s Boston Bruins scouted Marchand throughout the season. They traded two fourth-round picks to the New York Islanders in the 2006 NHL entry draft for a third-round pick, which they used to choose Marchand 71st overall. In October 2007, Marchand agreed to an entry-level contract with the team.
Marchand’s portion of the transaction went into effect immediately before the 2006–07 QMJHL season. On January 2, 2006, the Wildcats sold Marchand and two draft picks to the Val-d’Or Foreurs in return for Luc Bourdon, Jean-Sebastien Adam, and Ian Mathieu-Girard. He led the league with 16 goals and 24 assists in 20 games during the playoffs that season, and he finished with 33 goals and 47 assists in 57 regular season games with Val-d’Or.
