Career
Following his playing retirement, Lyon started his coaching career with Richmond in 1996 as an assistant coach to senior coach Robert Walls. In 2000, Lyon relocated to Carlton. He served under senior coaches David Parkin, Wayne Brittain, and Denis Pagan for three years at Carlton as both an assistant coach and the team’s VFL coach.
Lyon became an assistant midfield coach for the Sydney Swans in 2004, working under senior coach Paul Roos, a former Fitzroy teammate. He played a key role in the Swans’ success in the 2005 and 2006 grand finals.
A list of applicants was created when the senior coaching position at St Kilda became vacant at the end of 2006. Favorite John Longmire was among the 52 applicants Lyon defeated for the position. He took over as St Kilda’s senior coach when Grant Thomas was fired a week after the Saints lost to Melbourne in an elimination final in the 2006 finals series.
After taking over as the team’s senior coach, Lyon hired his own assistants. For his first season, he appointed close friend and AFL Team of the Century fullback Stephen Silvagni, Anthony Rock, former Carlton assistant coach Tony Elshaug, and John Barker as assistant coaches. Additionally, he assisted in enticing Sydney-based fitness instructor David Misson to join the team.
Elshaug took over as head of recruiting after Silvagni left the team at the conclusion of 2010 to work with Greater Western Sydney after four years as defence coach. Leigh Tudor and Robert Harvey are two other prominent assistants who worked with Lyon throughout his tenure as coach.
With a winning percentage of 64.5%, Lyon is the most successful St Kilda coach.

The Saints won four of their first seven games after Lyon started his first season as senior coach with a victory over Melbourne in Round 1 of 2007. However, St Kilda only had 24 of the 38 players available to play against Hawthorn in Round 8 due to injuries. Over the next few weeks, St Kilda’s more defensive approach infuriated many, and Lyon was chastised for flooding excessively.
Lyon was renowned for implementing the league’s most organized and defensive game plans at both St Kilda and Fremantle, with a special focus on the squad as a whole providing defensive pressure when the opposition has the ball. His teams have consistently been among the best in the league, if not the best, for points conceded throughout his career.
In 2009, when St Kilda won the minor premiership, they gave up just 1,411 points in the home-and-away season, 367 fewer than the next best. As a result, they have performed well even when their points scored were closer to the league average.
