Career

At the age of eighteen, Roberts-Smith joined the Australian Army in 1996. Roberts-Smith was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment (3 RAR) in Holsworthy, New South Wales, after completing basic training at Blamey Barracks in Kapooka and initial employment training at the School of Infantry at Lone Pine Barracks in Singleton. He started out in a rifle company before rising to the position of section leader in the Direct Fire Support Weapons Platoon. Roberts-Smith was deployed twice with Rifle Company Butterworth in Malaysia with three RAR. In 1999, he participated in two operations in East Timor, one of which was with the International Force East Timor. He was promoted to corporal by 2001, after Malaysia and East Timor.

Roberts-Smith was first assigned to 3 Squadron at Campbell Barracks in Perth following his completion of the Special Air Service Regiment (SASR) selection school and the SASR reinforcement cycle in 2003. He had to give up his corporal rank and begin at the base rank of trooper to join SASR. He served with training and support teams around Southeast Asia while in 3 Squadron. He participated in the 2004 evacuation of Australian people from Fiji and served with Security Detachment Iraq in 2005 and 2006.

As part of the 2006 Dutch/Australian Offensive, Roberts-Smith served as a scout and sniper in a patrol on May 31, 2006, with the objective of establishing an observation on the mountain Koran Ghar, which overlooked the Chora Pass in Uruzgan Province. In addition to Roberts-Smith, the patrol included two junior soldiers, Sergeant Matthew Locke, an American special forces radio operator, and a British sergeant from the Special Boat Service. The patrol’s objectives were to remain hidden while keeping an eye on and reporting on Anti-Coalition Militia actions in the pass below.

On June 2, the American reported to the squad that he had seen a lone Afghan adolescent approaching the patrol observation position and then leaving shortly after. Roberts-Smith and Locke came to the observation station after learning of the kid’s departure and asked why the teen had not been engaged. The other soldiers retorted that they were told to keep a low profile and observe. Roberts-Smith and Locke “decided to hunt down and shoot dead the two ‘enemy’ after concluding they had spotted the patrol,” despite the other soldiers’ decision that it was not essential to confront the Afghan.

In October 2013, Roberts-Smith stated he was quitting the full-time army, and the University of Queensland gave him a scholarship to pursue a Master of Business Administration. The university’s goal at the time was to create a curriculum that would help troops transition into corporate positions. After graduating in December 2016 at the age of 38, Roberts-Smith stated, “I joined the army at the age of 18, so I hadn’t gone to university for a Bachelor degree and I didn’t have the base level of business knowledge because there were many things I just hadn’t been exposed to.
