Career
McKenna was chosen by the Medicine Hat Tigers in the 2022 bantam selection, making him the first player from the Yukon to be taken first overall in the Western Hockey League (WHL). He was the third player to be granted exceptional player designation by BC Hockey and Hockey Alberta, following Connor Bedard and Matthew Savoie, although the WHL would not grant him this status. He finished his rookie season with 18 points in 16 games, including four points in his WHL debut. Additionally, he scored 75 points in 26 games while playing for the South Alberta Hockey Academy at the under-18 prep level.
In 2023–24, McKenna played in 61 regular season games and scored 34 goals and 97 points in his first complete WHL season. He was named the WHL’s rookie of the year and was awarded the Jim Piggott Memorial Trophy in appreciation of his accomplishments. It was referred to by McKenna as “a true honour.” As the top player across the three CHL component leagues, he also took home the CHL Rookie of the Year Award. He was also selected to the CHL’s All-Rookie Team and Third All-Star Team.
McKenna was appointed an alternate captain by the Tigers prior to the 2024–25 season. He started a long point streak on November 6 and reached 36 games on March 7, shattering the joint 21st-century WHL record of Connor Bedard and Logan Stankoven. At 40 games, the run lasted till the end of the season. Despite scoring 41 goals and dishing out a league-high 88 assists in 56 games, McKenna failed to collect a point in three of the season’s games. He finished second in the WHL with 129 points, behind Andrew Cristall of the Spokane Chiefs.

McKenna was named the WHL’s most valuable player and was given the Four Broncos Memorial Trophy. As the Tigers advanced far in the playoffs, his point streak grew longer until he failed to score in the second game of the WHL Finals, bringing it to a close at 54 games. McKenna returned for the title-clinching fifth game of the Finals, where the Tigers defeated the Chiefs to win the Ed Chynoweth Cup, after missing the third and fourth games due to an unexplained injury. He led all Medicine Hat players with 38 points and 9 goals in 16 postseason games. The Tigers participated in the 2025 Memorial Cup as WHL winners, making it to the championship final before losing to London, the Ontario Hockey League champion.
At the IIHF World U18 Championships in 2024, McKenna made his debut for Canada internationally. With ten goals and 10 assists in seven games, he led Team Canada in scoring as they advanced to the gold medal game. McKenna’s sixteenth point in the semi-final matchup against Sweden broke the previous Canadian record for most points at a single U18 tournament, surpassing both Tyson Jost and Macklin Celebrini. In the gold medal game, he recorded a hat trick and added an assist as Canada defeated the United States 6–4 to win the championship. He was selected for the event’s Media All-Star Team.
