Career
Crowley was first selected by Fremantle in the 2002 national draft with pick number 55. He was delisted at the end of 2004 after just playing WAFL football with Subiaco. However, the team gave Crowley another shot and used their third pick in the rookie round to choose him again. When both Robert Haddrill and his replacement, Michael Warren, were placed on the long-term injured list in 2005, Subiaco’s strong play earned him a promotion to the senior list.
His debut was noteworthy because, together with Paul Medhurst and Leigh Wardell-Johnson, he became just the third Fremantle player to kick three goals in his first game. These goals helped Fremantle defeat Geelong by an unexpected nine points at Skilled Stadium. Ryan was promoted to the senior list for the 2006 season due to his sustained strong play in the second part of the 2005 campaign, which included four goals against Carlton at the MCG. Byron Pickett gave Ryan a hard hit to the face during a game early in the 2006 season, breaking his cheekbone.

However, he turned into a defensive midfielder or tagger in 2008 and was known for playing on opposition players like Daniel Kerr and Gary Ablett, Jr. He did well at the end of the year, placing joint sixth in the Doig Medal, Fremantle’s best and fairest award.
Crowley missed three months or the whole 2009 season due to a foot injury sustained at the Round 6 Western Derby. It was not until the first round of 2010 that he rejoined the Fremantle team. He participated in the season’s first 16 games before missing the next six due to a knee injury sustained against Melbourne. After demonstrating his fitness with a strong performance for Subiaco in the WAFL, when he kicked seven goals, he returned for Fremantle’s two finals.
