Dončić’s father began playing for Union Olimpija, the local team, when he was eight years old. Dončić was asked to practice alongside players his own age by Grega Brezovec, coach of the Olimpija Basketball School. Dončić was transferred to the 11-year-old group by the coaching staff just 16 minutes into his first training session.
Olimpija’s under-14 team was his main practice partner starting in the following session. Nevertheless, Dončić was limited to playing for the club’s under-12 squad due to league regulations, starting off the bench against opponents who were three or four years older than him.
Dončić frequently requested to go to practice, even when his coach ordered him to stay at home, even though he was not allowed to play in under-14 matches then.
In less than two minutes of playing time, Dončić made his professional debut for Real Madrid against Unicaja in the Liga ACB on April 30, 2015. It was his only three-point try.
