Career

He played in 16 games as a freshman in 2013 and made 9 starts. With 57 strikeouts and a 3.14 earned run average (ERA), he had a 4–3 record. He was a member of the 2014 College World Series winning squad and was 12–2 with 111 strikeouts and a 2.64 ERA as a sophomore. In Vanderbilt’s victory over the University of California, Irvine on June 16, 2014, Buehler pitched 5+1⁄3 innings of no-hit relief, striking out seven batters and retiring the first nine he faced.

Buehler played for the Cape Cod Baseball League (CCBL) Yarmouth–Dennis Red Sox after the 2014 season and had one appearance as a pitcher for the U.S. collegiate team. He threw 28+2⁄3 innings for the Red Sox, recording a 0.63 earned run average with 24 strikeouts. He led the Red Sox to the league title in the 2014 CCBL playoffs, winning both of his starts, not giving up a run in 15+1⁄3 innings, and sharing MVP honours.

The Los Angeles Dodgers signed Buehler on July 17, 2015, for a $1.78 million bonus after selecting him with the 24th overall pick in the 2015 Major League Baseball draft. It was announced shortly after he signed that he would need Tommy John surgery and would need to recuperate for a year and a half.

On August 23, 2016, he made his professional baseball debut for the Arizona League Dodgers, retiring all six batters he faced and striking out three. On August 28, he was promoted to the Midwest League’s Great Lakes Loons. He made one start in his two appearances for the Loons and pitched three innings without giving up a hit or a run.

On September 6, 2017, Buehler was added to the Dodgers’ main league roster for the first time. On March 29, 2025, Buehler made his Red Sox debut, losing to the Texas Rangers after allowing four runs on seven hits in 4+1⁄3 innings. Despite giving up five earned runs on seven hits in five innings, he would go on to get his first win in a Red Sox uniform in his next start. On May 2, Buehler’s shoulder irritation led to his placement on the injured list (IL). On May 20, he made his comeback to the field against the New York Mets, pitching 2+1⁄3 hitless innings when home plate umpire Mike Estabrook dismissed him for disputing balls and strikes.

As August approached, concerns regarding Buehler’s rotational future were heightened by yet another poor outing against the Houston Astros, in which he once again fell short of five innings pitched. But after getting off to a strong start, Buehler pitched six scoreless innings against the San Diego Padres. It was the first time this season that he had held an opponent scoreless, excepting the game in which he was ejected. On August 22, Buehler was shifted to the bullpen following two more subpar starts in August.

The Red Sox dismissed Buehler on August 29. He made 22 starts and finished 7–7 with a 5.45 ERA.
