After finishing his studies, Sam decided to pursue coaching. He started as a student coach at Auburn from 2000 to 2003. Following that, he worked as the video coordinator and administrative assistant at Auburn from 2003 to 2005. Then, he served as the assistant coach of Tulsa from 2005 to 2007.
Afterward, he took on the role of video coordinator at Georgia Tech from 2007 to 2009. Subsequently, he became an assistant coach at Georgia Tech from 2009 to 2013. Later on, he became the assistant coach at Louisville from 2013 to 2017. Notably, he played a crucial role in guiding Louisville to a program-best 36-3 record in the 2017-18 season.
