Career
Rivers guided NC State to an 8–4 record as a freshman in 2000, which included a victory over Minnesota in the MicronPC Bowl. Comebacks accounted for four of the Wolfpack’s wins. He tossed for 397 yards and three touchdowns in his first game, a 38–31 victory over Arkansas State in double overtime. As time ran out, he engineered a 74-yard drive to tie the game. He threw for 401 yards in a 41–38 victory over Indiana a week later. With less than a minute remaining, a crucial 47-yard pass to future first-round pick Koren Robinson capped off the effort. Late in the fourth quarter, NC State was behind 31–28 against Duke when Rivers scored a touchdown on a seven-yard run.
He broke six school passing requirements, won the conference Freshman of the Year award, and was named ACC Rookie of the Week eight times. NC State possessed a quarterback of All-American caliber for the first time since Roman Gabriel led the Wolfpack offense in the early 1960s.

In 2001, Rivers connected for 2,586 yards and 16 touchdowns as a sophomore. He led the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) with a completion rate of 65.2%. The Wolfpack returned to the Tangerine Bowl after finishing the 2001 season 7–4. In a 34-19 loss to Pitt, the quarterback had a strong game, passing for 189 yards and a score.
In the 2004 NFL draft, Rivers was anticipated to be selected early in the first round. However, some NFL general managers were concerned about Rivers’ lack of arm strength and his unconventional side-arm throwing technique, despite his track record of success in college and great accuracy (72 completion percentage for his senior season). It was widely believed before to the draft that Rivers could be chosen by the Pittsburgh Steelers with the eleventh pick. Eli Manning was highly sought after by the San Diego Chargers, who intended to use their first-round pick—the first overall pick in the draft—to choose him.
The New York Giants and the Chargers reached an agreement on draft day. After selecting Manning first, San Diego traded him to New York for Rivers, who was chosen fourth by the Giants, along with draft selections that the Chargers eventually used to select future Pro Bowlers Shawne Merriman and Nate Kaeding.
Following Flutie’s departure, Rivers moved up to the second spot on the Chargers quarterback depth chart. During the Chargers’ 2005 training camp and preseason, Rivers was unable to defeat Brees for the starting quarterback position. Rivers joined the game in the Chargers’ home game at Qualcomm Stadium in 2005 when Brees was struck by Denver Broncos safety John Lynch late in the second quarter, dislocating his right shoulder. With two fumbles and one interception, Rivers finished 12 of 22 passing attempts for 115 yards.
On September 13, 2020, Rivers made his Colts debut. The Colts lost 27–20 against the Jacksonville Jaguars, however he finished with 363 passing yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions. The Colts defeated the Minnesota Vikings 28–11 in Week 2, earning him his first win with the team. In Week 6, he led the Colts from a 24-7 deficit to a 31-27 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals, passing for 371 yards, three touchdowns, and one interception.
Retirement
After seventeen seasons in the NFL, Rivers announced his retirement on January 20, 2021, stating, “It’s just time.” It’s perfectly appropriate. He reiterated his intention to take over as head coach of the football team at Fairhope, Alabama’s St. Michael Catholic High School.
On July 21, 2025, four years later, he signed a one-day deal to leave the Chargers.

Rivers paid just less than $1 million for a house in Westfield, Indiana, in 2020. The home has five bedrooms and a large square footage, making it “modest” by the standards of professional athletes. When this house was listed for $1.05 million, a buyer was drawn to it right away.
Given that the mansion has four fireplaces, a wet bar, a projection theater system, and 7,500 square feet of living area, this is hardly surprising.
