Career

As an assistant state attorney in Hillsborough County, Florida, Bondi served as a prosecutor and spokesperson. In 2006, Bondi charged former Major League Baseball player Dwight Gooden with breaking probation and abusing drugs, and in 2007, she also charged the defendants in the death of Martin Anderson.

In the 2010 Florida attorney general race, Bondi faced up against lieutenant governor Jeff Kottkamp in the Republican primary and former state legislator Holly Benson. Notably, Bondi had the backing of former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin in a field that was highly competitive. According to the Palm Beach Post, her media savvy—which includes frequent appearances on Fox News and her prominent affiliation with Sean Hannity—was responsible for her spike in support during the primary.

According to Mason-Dixon polling from August 2010, she was ahead of Kottkamp and Benson in the primary. With 37.89% of the vote, she won the primary in the end. She ran against Dan Gelber, a Democrat and former prosecutor who served in the state senate for ten years, in the general election. She became the first female attorney general of the state after defeating Gelber.

With 55% of the vote, Bondi was re-elected in November 2014. Former Administration for Children and Families acting commissioner George Sheldon, her Democratic opponent, garnered 42%.

Trump was required to pay a fine by the IRS in September 2016 after it found that the donation to Bondi’s PAC was illegal due to statutes prohibiting political contributions from nonprofit entities. Additionally, Trump had to pay back the charity the money that had been given to Bondi. Bondi and her PAC did not face criminal charges or fines. A New York state court ordered Trump to shut down the foundation and pay $2 million in damages in November 2019 for misusing it, including by giving Bondi an unlawful donation.

President-elect Trump declared on November 21, 2024, that she would be nominated for the US attorney general post following Matt Gaetz’s withdrawal.

The U.S. Senate Committee on the Judiciary held two hearings: one on January 15, 2025, and another on January 16. Democratic Senators questioned Bondi on her prior lobbying experience, the outcome of the 2020 presidential election, her relationship with Trump, and her opinions on TikTok.

Her nomination was accepted by the Senate Judiciary Committee on January 29 by a party-line vote of 12–10. On February 4, the Senate confirmed her by a vote of 54–46. Only Senator John Fetterman, a Democrat, cast a “aye” vote.

Bondi was called for a House Judiciary Committee oversight hearing on February 11, 2026, after being repeatedly criticized for allegedly using the Department of Justice as a weapon in the Epstein case, violating the rights of victims established by the Epstein Files Transparency Act (including releasing the full names and nude photographs of some victims), and purposefully hiding the names of co

conspirators in the files. News outlets described the hearing as a “clash” between Bondi and Democratic representatives, except Republican representative Thomas Massie, who chastised Bondi and the DOJ for their redaction failures. Survivors of Epstein’s abuse published an open letter addressed to Bondi with 15 questions about the handling of the files.

A number of those victims attended the session, and several of them expressed their dissatisfaction with the attorney general and the hearing in general as soon as it concluded.
