In 2001, Djokovic excelled in the U14 circuit of the ETA Junior Tour (now the Tennis Europe Junior Tour), securing his first ETA title in a second-category tournament in Messina by defeating fellow Serbian Bojan Božović in the final. He claimed his second title in Livorno, where he triumphed over top seed and future rival Andy Murray in the semifinals and defeated second seed Aljoscha Thron in the final.
In July, Djokovic participated as the top seed in the U14 European championship in Sanremo, where he emerged victorious in both the singles tournament against Lukáš Lacko and the doubles competition with Božović against the Russian duo of Alexandre Krasnoroutskiy and Mikhail Bekker.

Djokovic began his 2013 season preparations by competing in the Hopman Cup alongside Ana Ivanovic, where he won three out of four singles matches, including a final against Spain’s Fernando Verdasco, despite the match resulting in an overall loss of 1–2.
Djokovic triumphed over Stan Wawrinka in a fourth-round clash at the Australian Open, which lasted more than five hours and was considered one of the greatest matches ever. Wawrinka himself regarded it as the best match he had ever played.
