Career
Marner started honing his on-ice skills at 3 Zones Hockey School as a child. He went to Blyth Academy after attending The Hill Academy in Vaughan, Ontario.
During his minor career, Marner participated in the Greater Toronto Hockey League (GTHL) and Durham Region. He played with the Vaughan Kings during the 2011–12 season and later won a GTHL championship.
Marner switched to the GTHL’s Don Mills Flyers for the 2012–13 campaign, where he scored 86 points in 55 games during his minor midget season. He trailed Dylan Strome, who was then with the Toronto Marlboros, in the GTHL scoring standings. Marner was invited to join the St. Michael’s Buzzers of the Ontario Junior A Hockey League right away after his Flyers season ended, and he went on to win a championship there.
Marner chose to join with the London Knights, who chose him with their first round pick in the 2013 Priority Selection, even though the University of Michigan offered him a scholarship.
With 59 points in 64 games during his debut season with the Knights, Marner finished second in the OHL rookie of the year voting, trailing only Travis Konecny.
Alongside linemate Max Domi, Marner had an outstanding season in 2014–15. As the season progressed, Marner was consistently included as one of the top prospects in the 2015 NHL entry draft, being listed as a definite top ten pick, if not top five.
Marner married his longtime love Stephanie LaChance at Niagara-on-the-Lake’s Peller Estates Winery on July 29, 2023. Several of his former and present teammates attended the wedding.
