Career
In 1995, Tomlin started his coaching career as head coach Bill Stewart’s wide receiver coach at Virginia Military Institute. Tomlin worked with the defensive backs and special teams at the University of Memphis during the 1996 season as a graduate assistant.
In 1997, Tomlin was hired by Arkansas State University to teach its defensive backs after a brief tenure on Martin’s coaching staff at the University of Tennessee. He spent two seasons there until the University of Cincinnati signed him to teach defensive backs.
In 2001, head coach Tony Dungy hired Tomlin as the defensive backs coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. It was there that Tomlin first became familiar with the Tampa 2 system, which he would later employ as a coach.
The Buccaneers won the NFL in total defense (the fewest yards allowed per game) in 2002 and 2005 under new head coach Jon Gruden, who kept Tomlin. The defense never finished lower than sixth overall while Tomlin was in charge. Three of the Buccaneers’ five interceptions were returned for touchdowns, setting a Super Bowl record when the club won Super Bowl XXXVII in January 2003.
Tomlin was chosen to interview for the open head coaching post with the Pittsburgh Steelers, the 2005 Super Bowl champion, after serving as the Vikings’ defensive coordinator in 2006. On January 27, 2007, Tomlin, who had only one year of experience as a defensive coordinator, was appointed as the 16th head coach in the history of the organization, succeeding Bill Cowher, who had retired after 15 years.
Additionally, Tomlin had interviewed for the Miami Dolphins’ head coaching position, which ultimately went to former Indiana head coach Cam Cameron. The Steelers followed their practice of employing head coaches in their 30s with Tomlin.
