Career
When Matheson was younger, he participated in the Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament in 2006 and 2008 with a West Island minor ice hockey club.
From 2009 to 2011, Matheson played at the Midget AAA level with the Lac St-Louis Lions of the Quebec Junior AAA Hockey League (QMAAA). He joined the United States Hockey League (USHL) Dubuque Fighting Saints in 2011–12, when he topped all defensemen in scoring.
After that, he made a commitment to play collegiate ball for the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s Boston College (NCAA). Contextually, Matheson stated that his desire to improve as a player in both the USHL and the NCAA was his personal reason for leaving his home province of Quebec.
On February 20, 2016, Matheson made his NHL debut in a 3-1 victory over the Winnipeg Jets after being initially assigned to the Panthers’ new AHL club, the Portland Pirates, to start the 2015–16 season.

In a similar vein, on April 15, he made his Stanley Cup playoff debut in Game 2 of the Panthers’ first-round game against the New York Islanders. Early in the next season, he scored his first goal in the NHL against the Tampa Bay Lightning.
Matheson and Colton Sceviour were traded by the Panthers to the Pittsburgh Penguins on September 24, 2020, in return for Patric Hörnqvist. He would set career highs in goals (11) and points (31) during the 2021–2022 season, and his five game-winning goals (GWG) was second in Penguins franchise history for the most by a defenseman in a single season.
In exchange for Jeff Petry and Ryan Poehling, Matheson was transferred to the Montreal Canadiens on July 16, 2022, along with a 2023 fourth-round draft pick. Through the deal, Matheson was reunited with his former agent, Kent Hughes, who had joined the Canadiens as general manager in January 2022.
Matheson, who was expected to be the team’s best defenseman, was seen to have played well in the preseason games leading up to the 2022–2023 season. However, he strained his abdominal muscle during an exhibition game at Kraft Hockeyville. He would be out for the first eight weeks of the season, it was later revealed.
Matheson was appointed as the Canadiens organization’s alternate captain ahead of the 2023–24 season, following the departure of fellow blueliner Joel Edmundson to the Washington Capitals.
Over the course of the campaign, he achieved a number of career milestones. He scored his 200th career NHL point on January 11 against the San Jose Sharks, but he skated in his 500th career NHL game on December 30, 2023, in a 4-1 loss to the Florida Panthers. On February 8, 2025, Matheson participated in his 600th NHL game during the 2024–2025 season.
