Career
Growing up in his hometown of Kitchener, Ontario, Scheifele played hockey with the Alliance Pavilion League’s Kitchener Jr. Rangers rep team. Prior to being switched to a forward position, Scheifele was a defenseman. Scheifele claimed that he wore the number 55 when playing minor hockey because he aspired to be like his older brother, Kyle.
He played track and field, basketball, badminton, and volleyball competitively while he was a high school student at Grand River Collegiate Institute. It wasn’t until he was sixteen years old that Scheifele started to concentrate on hockey particularly. Following his 2008–09 minor midget season, Scheifele was selected in the seventh round of the 2009 OHL Priority Selection by the Saginaw Spirit of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL).
The Spirit transferred goaltender Mavric Parks to the Barrie Colts in exchange for Scheifele’s playing rights and a 2013 second-round pick. Scheifele finished second on the club in scoring early in his first season with the Colts and was named the OHL’s Central Division Academic Award winner for the month of October. He was then invited to the WFCU Centre for the 2010 CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game. The NHL Central Scouting Bureau ranked Scheifele 16th among North American skaters and 19th overall among OHL prospects prior to the 2011 NHL entry draft.
Prior to the 2011–12 season, Scheifele participated in the Winnipeg Jets’ training camp and exhibition games. Additionally, he declared that he would don jersey number 55 because Jim Slater had taken his favorite, number 19. He earned the first star award in an exhibition game against the Columbus Blue Jackets during the preseason after scoring two goals and dishing out two assists.
The Jets declared on October 3, 2011, that Scheifele would begin the season on Winnipeg’s NHL roster after signing him to an entry-level contract. After that, on October 6, 2011, Scheifele made his NHL debut. On October 19, 2011, he scored his first NHL goal against Toronto Maple Leafs forward James Reimer. He participated in seven games before being reassigned.
