Career
McGuire represented Queensland’s under-17 and under-19 teams in 2007. He represented Queensland’s under-18 team in 2008. From 2008 to 2010, McGuire participated in 29 games and scored 11 tries for the Brisbane Broncos Under 20 team.
McGuire played off the interchange bench in Brisbane’s 26–10 victory over the New Zealand Warriors in Round 3 of the NRL. McGuire scored his first NRL try in Brisbane’s 30–10 victory over the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks at Suncorp Stadium in Round 22. McGuire played in 14 games and scored two tries at the end of his first season in the NRL.
McGuire was unintentionally jabbed by teammate Mitchell Dodds during Round 8 against the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs, resulting in a major eye injury that required hospitalization due to severe bleeding. Later, McGuire made a comeback for the Brisbane team against the Parramatta Eels in Round 17. McGuire made eighteen appearances at the end of the season. Due to problems with his eligibility to play for Samoa, he was later left out of the Australian Kangaroos train-on team. McGuire signed a three-year contract extension with Brisbane on October 26.
McGuire participated in his 100th NRL game as Brisbane defeated the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles 36–10 at Suncorp Stadium in Round 12. In Game 3 of the 2014 State of Origin series, he was once more chosen as Queensland’s 18th man. McGuire played in 24 games and scored two tries at the end of the regular season.
While in the Prime Minister’s XIII squad, McGuire was chosen for the Samoan 24-man roster for the Four Nations series on October 7. McGuire would participate in all three of the tournament’s games after completing his duties with the PM’s XIII, starting at hooker in two of the test games.
McGuire was sent off the field on February 4th, during a preseason match against Leigh, for using foul language. Following an RFL inquiry, McGuire was found guilty on February 14 of using a disparaging phrase about a disability and was banned for seven games. McGuire was fined £1000 and suspended for 12 games on June 6 for using “unacceptable language” during Warrington’s May loss to Leigh. McGuire’s departure from Warrington by “mutual agreement” to return to Australia was confirmed on June 19.
