Career

When Carrey was fifteen years old in 1977, his father drove him to Downtown Toronto to make his stand-up comedy debut at the newly opened Yuk Yuk’s comedy club, which operated one night a week out of the basement of community center The 519 on Church Street. The father was trying to help Carrey put together a stage act. Carrey’s mother decided to dress him in a polyester leisure suit for the performance because “that’s how they dress on The Dean Martin Celebrity Roast.”

Carrey’s traditional impersonations failed miserably as a pubescent, making him question his ability to be a professional entertainer and unsuitable for a club with a bawdy humorous mentality. Carrey’s stand-up debut was referred to as “bad Rich Little” by Yuk Yuk’s owner, Mark Breslin, decades later.

The family eventually relocated into a new house in Jackson’s Point after their financial circumstances improved. Carrey’s first paid engagement came in 1979 when he returned to the stage with a more polished act and more domestic stability.

He was paid Can$20 for a 20-minute appearance at the Hay Loft club on Highway 48 in Scarborough, which was part of a bill with the Mother of Pearl performer from The Pig and Whistle. He quickly overcame his worries and returned downtown to Yuk Yuk’s, the place of his disaster from two years prior, which had since relocated to a permanent location on Bay Street in the upscale Yorkville neighborhood.

In addition to becoming more and more well-known in the Toronto area as an impressionist stand-up comedian, Carrey attempted to make a name for himself in sketch comedy by trying out for the 1980–81 season of Saturday Night Live on NBC. The show’s new executive producer, Jean Doumanian, ultimately chose thirty-one-year-old Charles Rocket over Carrey.

Carrey would host the program in May 1996, January 2011, and October 2014 after becoming a Hollywood movie star decades later. Carrey accepted a voice acting gig doing Clutch Cargo-inspired segments on The All-Night Show, an overnight program that aired locally on the CFMT-TV channel under the Multilingual Television (MTV) brand, after failing to win a spot on Saturday Night Live.

Carrey made the decision to relocate to Hollywood in the beginning of 1983, and he started doing regular shows at The Comedy Store. His immediate professional objective was to appear on The Tonight Show, and by spring 1983, he seemed to have succeeded after landing a stand-up spot on the popular late-night program.

But he was unbooked due to a mediocre club act at The Improv. Carrey continued to be a huge hit in his hometown of Toronto, where he returned in late April 1983 to perform three nights in a row at the short-lived B.B. Magoon’s theatrical venue on Bloor Street, despite his inability to duplicate his success in Los Angeles.

The Duck Factory sitcom, which was originally slated to premiere in January 1984, made its debut in April, running Thursdays at 9:30 p.m. between Hill Street Blues and Cheers. In the same month, Carrey accepted a position as host of the 1984 U-Know Awards ceremony, which was hosted in Toronto in the Ballroom of the Royal York Hotel.

The network had already canceled The Duck Factory by the time Carrey made his first appearance on NBC’s Late Night with David Letterman in late July 1984. He returned to touring with his impressionist act, frequently opening for Rodney Dangerfield.

The film Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, which Carrey starred in, was released in February 1994 and made $72 million in the US and Canada. After its success and prior to the release of his next movie, The Mask, which was expected to be another hit, Morgan Creek Productions paid him $5 million to play Ace Ventura again.

New Line Cinema also offered him $7 million to make a sequel to The Mask and paid him $7 million to appear in Dumb and Dumber, which was a nearly tenfold increase in his Ace Ventura salary. The Mask made $351 million globally when it was released in July 1994, and Dumb and Dumber made over $270 million when it was released in December of the same year.
