His first job in radio was with WMAL in Washington, DC, where Acosta started his professional career. Acosta transitioned to television in 1994, leaving WMAL to take on the role of desk assistant at WTTG-TV, a Fox affiliate. Acosta transitioned to on-camera work in 1995, taking on the roles of reporter and substitute anchor at WBIR-TV, an NBC affiliate in Knoxville, Tennessee. He held this position until 1998.
Acosta served as a reporter for the CBS affiliate KTVT-TV in Fort Worth from 1998 to 2000. Acosta worked as a reporter for WBBM-TV in Chicago from 2000 to 2001. Between 2001 and 2003, Acosta served as a CBS News’ Newspath service correspondent while being based in Dallas and Chicago. Acosta served as a CBS News correspondent from February 2003 to March 2007, initially based in New York City and later in Atlanta.
