Career
She clinched the girls’ singles title at the US Open and the doubles title at the French Open alongside Kim Clijsters in 1998, finishing the year as world No. 1 in junior singles and No. 7 in doubles. She held a scholarship from the Australian Institute of Sport.
Zu Beginn des Jahres bildete Dokic mit Mark Philippoussis eine Mannschaft und gewann den Hopman-Cup. It was, until 2016, the only time Australia had won at the event. She was then granted a wildcard entry into the Australian Open, where she lost in two sets to the world No. 1, Martina Hingis.
Dokic achieved her breakthrough at Wimbledon, where she, as a qualifier, upset the world No. 1 Hingis by defeating her in the first round in straight sets. She was the lowest-ranked player to beat the top seed in a Grand Slam tournament during the Open era, ranked No. 129 at the time.
She won against Mary Pierce, seeded ninth, in straight sets and then lost to Alexandra Stevenson in the quarterfinals after three sets. In Tokyo, Dokic and Amanda Coetzer made it to the doubles final of the WTA Tour, marking Dokic’s first appearance in such a final. In 1999, she moved up 298 positions, ending the year as world No. 43.

In the 2000 Australian Open, Dokic lost in the first round to Hungary’s Rita Kuti-Kis. Following the match, Dokic remarked, “I lost to a player who has never been one and probably never will be.”
During the clay court season in spring, Dokic advanced to the quarterfinals of the Tier I tournaments in Hilton Head, South Carolina, and Rome (where she upset Venus Williams), and secured Fed Cup wins against Kim Clijsters, Anna Kournikova, and Sandrine Testud. Nevertheless, Dokic was defeated in the second round of the French Open.
