Career

Prior to committing to collegiate hockey with Providence College of the Hockey East, Walman played junior hockey with the Toronto Jr. Canadiens in the Ontario Junior Hockey League (OJHL). Before his first season with the Friars, the St. Louis Blues selected Walman in the third round of the 2014 NHL entry draft, 82nd overall.

After finishing his junior season with the Friars in 2016–17, Walman signed a three-year, entry-level contract with the St. Louis Blues on March 28, 2017, capping off his collegiate career early.

In 2019–20, Walman made his NHL debut with the Blues. He scored four goals and had four assists in 57 games over his three seasons with the Blues. In exchange for Nick Leddy and Luke Witkowski, Walman was transferred to the Detroit Red Wings on March 21, 2022, along with Oskar Sundqvist and a second-round choice in the 2023 NHL entry draft.

After playing on the injured reserve for the first part of the season, Walman came back and was given a bigger position on the squad, playing next to Moritz Seider.

He then became well-known for using the Griddy dance to celebrate. Walman re-signed a three-year, $10.2 million contract agreement with the Red Wings on February 28, 2023.

In return for future considerations, he was dealt to the San Jose Sharks on June 25, 2024, along with a second-round pick in the 2024 NHL entry draft. He was acquired by the Edmonton Oilers in March 2025 in return for Carl Berglund and a 2026 conditional first-round pick.
