Career
Shortly after graduating from high school, Schafer began modeling. The advantage of “looking like a model” was something she aimed to use to dismantle gender identity notions. She went to Brooklyn to model in New York City in 2017 after meeting an agency on Instagram and signing with Elite Model Management.
She began modeling for companies such as Dior and Marc Jacobs, and by the end of the year, she was also a model for Versus Versace, Gucci, Converse, and Helmut Lang. She walked for nine fashion brands in the beginning of 2018, including House of Holland, Marc Jacobs, and Miu Miu. She traveled overseas for the first time to model in Europe and made her debut at New York Fashion Week.
Among other fashion brands, she has modeled for Erdem, Tommy Hilfiger, Thierry Mugler, Coach, Maison Margiela, Vera Wang, Emilio Pucci, Ann Demeulemeester, Prada, Calvin Klein, and Rick Owens.
Schafer intended to study clothing design for nonbinary persons at Central Saint Martins, an arts college in London, England, where she got accepted after high school. Additionally, she intended to use grant funds she had obtained from Teen Vogue for her “21 Under 21” feature to create a trans artist studio and gallery in New York. But after landing a part in the HBO series Euphoria, she made the decision to concentrate on acting.
Schafer’s portrayal of Tigris Snow in the 2023 Hunger Games prequel, The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, was hailed as “excellent” and “underused”. She starred as an American teen who reluctantly travels with her family to a spooky, isolated resort in Germany in Tilman Singer’s horror film Cuckoo in 2024.
Her portrayal was described as “an intense and emotional central performance” and it was her first leading role in a feature film. She appeared in one scene of the anthology film Kinds of Kindness, directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, in 2024.
