Career
Hudson was among the rare organists in rock and roll and rhythm and blues who did not use a Hammond organ. Hudson seized the chance to negotiate the acquisition of a new Lowrey organ as part of his compensation package when he joined the Hawks.
The Lowrey organ provided a distinct combination of features, and Hudson performed on one with Ronnie Hawkins and the Hawks as well as with Bob Dylan and the Band, using three different models: initially a Festival (FL) console, which was swapped for a Lincolnwood TSO-25 in 1969, and later a horseshoe console H25 model, as shown in The Last Waltz

The Hawks turned into a skilled band under Hawkins’ close supervision. In 1963, they parted ways with Hawkins, released two singles, and toured almost non-stop as Levon and the Hawks, performing in bars and clubs. In 1965, Hudson began his career as a session musician, contributing to John Hammond, Jr.’s album So Many Roads alongside Robertson (on guitar) and Helm (on drums).
Mary Martin, assistant to manager Albert Grossman, introduced them to Bob Dylan in August 1965. In October, Dylan and the Hawks cut the single “Can You Please Crawl Out Your Window?”. and, in January 1966, worked with Dylan on recorded material that would become the Blonde on Blonde album. Dylan engaged the band to support him on his contentious 1966 “electric” tour across the United States, Australia, and Europe.
