Career
Maresca returned to Italy in January 2000 and signed a £4.3 million contract with Juventus, which at the time set a club record for Albion. Before the season ended, he participated in one Serie A match.
Maresca was loaned to neighboring league teams Bologna and Piacenza for two of the next three seasons; in the latter case, he had a co-ownership contract. Despite scoring nine goals in the 2002–03 season, the team was relegated. He scored a crucial equalizer against neighboring Torino in the Derby della Mole return leg of the previous season.

However, he caused controversy when he mimicked Torino’s Marco Ferrante’s previous “bull-horn” goal celebration (the bull is a club symbol because it is Turin’s coat of arms, and the team is also known in its contracted form as “Toro” bull in Italian). The remaining 50% of his rights were then purchased by Juventus for €2.6 million.
Maresca, Fabrizio Miccoli, and Giorgio Chiellini were bought by Fiorentina for €13 million in the summer of 2004; Juventus retained half of the players’ rights. On September 12, he played 60 minutes in a 0–1 away loss to Roma, marking his official debut.
In a blind auction between the teams at the end of the season, Juventus acquired all three of them for about €6.7 million, with the Viola just escaping top-level relegation. Although Maresca only cost roughly €7,000, there was an additional €420,000 agency fee to retain the player.
Maresca finished second with the under-18s in the 1999 UEFA European Championship and was chosen by the Italy under-20 squad for the 2000 Toulon Tournament.
In addition, he played for the under-21 team for two years, from 2000 to 2002. Despite missing the 2002 UEFA European Championship competition in Switzerland due to injury, the team advanced to the tournament’s semifinals. He never reached his full potential.
Although he was frequently used as a deep-lying playmaker because of his ability to coordinate his team’s offensive moves and create goalscoring opportunities, Maresca’s preferred position was in a box-to-box role, either as a central or attacking midfielder, where he frequently displayed his offensive capabilities, eye for goal, and skill at making late attacking runs into the penalty area. Maresca was a versatile, consistent, fast, energetic, and hardworking player.
He might also perform as a mezzala. Because to his physical and mental qualities, as well as his endurance, persistence, and work-rate, he was a swift, dynamic, and creative player with good movement, technique, and calmness on the ball. He also had good vision, awareness, tactical intelligence, and passing ability.
