Career
Cease was a student at Milton High School. When he pitched for the school’s baseball team, his fastball velocity peaked at 98 miles per hour (158 km/h) and averaged between 91 and 95 miles per hour (146 to 153 km/h). Cease played shortstop when he wasn’t pitching. In his junior year in 2013, Milton won the baseball state championship while going 9-0 with an earned run average (ERA) of 0.81 in 69+1/3 innings thrown with 100 strikeouts. Additionally, Cease participated in a second consecutive state final series but was defeated by Lambert High School.
Cease competed for Winder, Georgia’s Team Elite during the summer and was invited to both the Perfect Game All-American Classic and the Perfect Game National Showcase. Cease pledged to play baseball for the Vanderbilt Commodores while attending Vanderbilt University on a scholarship.
Before Cease’s final year at Milton, in August 2013, Jonathan Mayo of MLB.com thought Cease might be selected in the first round of the 2014 MLB draft.
