Career

Gauff used to be the top junior in the world.  At the age of 12, she participated in the renowned Les Petits As 14-and-under competition in 2016 and advanced to the semifinals.  At the age of 13, Gauff started competing on the ITF Junior Circuit, going straight to the top-tier Grade A and Grade 1 competitions. In the Grade 1 Prince George’s County Junior Tennis Championships in Maryland, her third career event, she placed second to Jaimee Fourlis.  Gauff’s next event was the 2017 US Open, when she made her junior Grand Slam debut and lost to Amanda Anisimova in the second round.  In both tournaments, Gauff did not lose a set prior to the championship match. She became the youngest female to ever make it to the US Open singles finals.

Gauff lost her opening round match at the Australian Open in 2018, having started the year with a semifinal in the Grade 1 Traralgon Junior International in Australia.  It wasn’t until she won her maiden junior Grand Slam tournament championship at the 2018 French Open that she participated in another singles competition.  Until the final, when she overcame McNally in three sets after falling behind, she did not lose a set. Gauff won the title, making her the fifth youngest French Open girls’ singles champion in history.  She became the world’s top junior a month later after defeating McNally in the Grade 1 Junior International in Roehampton.

in the age of 14, Gauff qualified for the $25k event in Osprey in May 2018 and won her first professional match, marking her debut on the ITF Women’s Circuit. Five months after turning 14, she lost her first match despite being given a wild card to the US Open qualifying round. She and Ann Li placed second in doubles in the $100k Midland Tennis Classic in her debut competition in 2019. Gauff competed in her next event two weeks later at the $25k level in Surprise, where she advanced to the singles and doubles finals. Alongside Paige Hourigan, she won her first WTA Tour title in doubles and placed second in singles. In March, at the Miami Open, she recorded her first WTA Tour match win against Caty McNally.

Gauff played in the United Cup at the start of the 2025 season, where the United States defeated Poland to win the championship. She defeated world No. 2 Iga Świątek in straight sets in the final. Gauff finished the tournament without a loss.

She made it to the Australian Open quarterfinals before losing to Paula Badosa in straight sets.

She defeated Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus to win her second Grand Slam championship at the 2025 French Open.
