Career

When Piper was chosen to make an appearance on the Saturday morning children’s television program Scratchy & Co., her career officially began. Later on, she got a part in a TV ad for the popular magazine Smash Hits. At 15, she received a record deal offer, and in 1998, her song “Because We Want To,” released under the stage name “Billie,” became the youngest artist to debut at number one in the UK Singles Chart. Additionally, her follow-up single “Girlfriend” made its debut at the top of the charts.

Following this, Piper’s first album, Honey to the B, was released. It sold over 300,000 copies in the UK alone and peaked at number 14 on the UK Albums Chart. It also received a platinum certification and a double-platinum certification in New Zealand, where it peaked at number three on the New Zealand Albums Chart.

Though “Honey to the Bee” was a hit, Honey to the B had little success in other countries. For example, it peaked at number 31 on the ARIA Albums Chart in Australia, and it barely registered in the US, where it peaked at number 17 on the Billboard Heatseekers Chart.

Piper recorded her second album at the period. She made the decision to continue releasing music under her full name, Billie Piper. In May 2000, she made a comeback to the Singles Chart with “Day & Night,” her third number-one hit. She held off on releasing “Something Deep Inside” until September, and while it peaked at number four, her popularity declined. Walk of Life, Piper’s second album, was certified silver in the UK and peaked at No. 14 on the UK Album Chart before rapidly dropping off the rankings.

The album also charted in Australia, peaking at No. 23, and New Zealand, where it peaked at No. 17. Piper claims that the record was a “commercial bomb” in her memoirs.

As a figure who regenerated from Ncuti Gatwa’s Fifteenth Doctor, Piper made a comeback to Doctor Who in “The Reality War” in May 2025. Interestingly, neither the episode’s ending nor any follow-up media releases gave Piper credit as the Doctor.
