Career
Since 2004, Plaza has trained and performed sketch comedy and improv at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre. She also gave performances at The Improv and the Laugh Factory. Plaza cited Amy Poehler as the reason she decided to do improv. “It just felt like we are in an underground – literally, underground – theater doing an art form that is so fucking hard, and just so fun when you get it right,” she said of her “intoxicating” experience at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre.
She interned at Saturday Night Live during the 2004–2005 season while attending film school, and she then joined NBC as a page. She made an appearance on a 2006 episode of 30 Rock while completing this apprenticeship. It is a “legendary” and extremely exclusive program, yet working as a page at 30 Rockefeller Plaza was a lower job than her SNL internship.
In 2006, she also starred in the short films In Love and Killswitch. She participated in an Improv Everywhere sketch in 2008, where she and other participants brought a whole desktop computer and monitor to a New York City Starbucks.
In a 2024 Mountain Dew commercial that played during the Super Bowl LVIII broadcast, Plaza reunited with her Parks and Recreation co-star Nick Offerman. It was confirmed that she would play the lead in Liarmouth, John Waters’s first movie in more than two decades, which is based on his book of the same name.
Plaza plays TV host Wow Platinum in Francis Ford Coppola’s epic science fiction movie Megalopolis (2024) and Elliott Labrant’s future self in the comedy My Old Ass (2024). In the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU)-based Disney+ miniseries Agatha All Along, which debuted on September 18, 2024, she played witch Rio Vidal.
