Career

Judge was recruited by a number of universities, including Notre Dame, Stanford, and UCLA, to play football tight end, but he was more interested in baseball. In the 31st round of the 2010 MLB draft, he was chosen by the Oakland Athletics. Nevertheless, he chose to play baseball for the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Bulldogs at California State University, Fresno.

In 2011, Fresno State won the WAC Tournament, shared the WAC regular season championship, and advanced to the NCAA Division I baseball tournament. Judge was chosen a Freshman All-American by Louisville Slugger. The 2012 College Home Run Derby was won by him. In the summer of 2012, he participated in collegiate summer baseball with the Cape Cod Baseball League’s Brewster Whitecaps.

Judge led the Bulldogs in home runs, doubles, and runs batted in (RBIs) during his junior year. Judge was selected to the Bulldogs’ all-conference team in each of his three seasons—the Mountain West Conference (MW) as a junior and the WAC in his first two. Prior to his junior season, in July 2012, the Bulldogs joined the MW.

Judge was selected by the Yankees with the 32nd overall choice in the first round of the 2013 MLB draft as compensation for losing Nick Swisher to free agency. Judge received a $1.8 million signing bonus when he joined the Yankees. He missed the 2013 season due to a torn quadriceps femoris muscle sustained during a base running drill.

In 2014, Judge made his professional debut with the Class A South Atlantic League’s Charleston RiverDogs. In 65 games with Charleston, he hit nine home runs with 45 RBIs, had a.333 batting average (6th in the league), a.428 on-base percentage (OBP; third), a.530 slugging percentage (SLG; sixth), and a.958 OPS. During the season, he was promoted by the Yankees to the Tampa Yankees of the Class A-Advanced Florida State League, where he played 66 games and hit.283 with a.411 OBP (second in the league),.442 SLG, eight home runs, and 33 RBIs.

Prior to the 2026 World Baseball Classic, Judge was appointed captain of Team USA on April 14, 2025. Judge joined MLB Network to share his enthusiasm after Team USA manager Mark DeRosa made the announcement: “Now, getting a chance to have ‘USA’ across my chest and represent all the great people in our country and represent what this country means, it’s a great opportunity.” Even as a child, I never had this chance; therefore, I’m really excited about it.

Given his recent contract and leadership, Judge decided to concentrate on getting ready for his season with the Yankees rather than participate in the 2023 World Baseball Classic.
