Later that year, he defeated Amin Isa to win the British amateur title at the GB Championships. He defeated Irishman Cathal McMonagle 22:10 and German Eric Brechlin 23:16 in the 2011 European Championships in June, but Romanian southpaw Mihai Nistor stopped him after he received multiple standing counts.

Joshua’s professional transition under the Matchroom Sport promotional umbrella was confirmed on July 11, 2013. In the Main-Event of a show that included Scott Quigg’s victorious WBA (Regular) super-bantamweight title defense against Yoandris Salinas, Joshua made his professional debut on October 5, 2013, at the O2 Arena in London. He defeated Italian Emanuele Leo via technical knockout (TKO) in the opening round. On October 11, 2014, at The O2 Arena in London, Joshua made his ninth professional appearance for the vacant WBC International heavyweight title against Dennis Bakhtov, the former champion hoping to win the title a second time, in the Main-Event of a Matchroom Sport card for the second time in his career. At the age of just 24, Joshua won the WBC International heavyweight title and improved his record to 9-0 after winning the bout via KO in the second round.
