Career
Sasse was an associate consultant with Boston Consulting Group, a management consulting firm, from September 1994 to November 1995. He worked for Christians United For Reformation (CURE) as an executive director and consultant for the next year. Sasse became executive director of the Alliance of Confessing Evangelicals (ACE) in Anaheim, California, when CURE joined with ACE during his term.
Sasse worked as chief of staff for the Justice Department’s Office of Legal Policy from January 2004 to January 2005. He also commuted to Austin to lecture as a part-time assistant professor at the University of Texas at Austin. From January to July 2005, Sasse left the Department of Justice to work as Representative Jeff Fortenberry’s chief of staff.
From July to September 2005, Sasse served as a consultant for the US Department of Homeland Security, offering advice on matters pertaining to national security. From September 2005 until December 2006, he relocated to Austin, Texas, to continue his full-time professorship.
Sasse was the secretary’s counselor at the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) in Washington, D.C., from December 2006 to December 2007. Sasse advised the secretary on a wide range of health policy matters, including food safety and security and healthcare access.
Sasse was nominated by President George W. Bush in July 2007 to serve as the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ assistant secretary for planning and evaluation. He was confirmed by the Senate in December 2007 and held office until January 2009, when the Bush administration came to an end. Sasse took an unpaid leave of absence from the University of Texas while working at HHS.

Sasse declared his intention to run for the Senate seat occupied by Republican Mike Johanns, who was not running for reelection, in October 2013. As of October 2013, his first quarter fundraising total of about $815,000 from individual donors surpassed Nebraska’s previous record of $526,000 from individual donors, which Johanns had established in 2007 while serving as U.S. Secretary of Agriculture.
Sasse vehemently opposed the Affordable Care Act when he announced his candidacy. Sasse’s main opponent, former state treasurer Shane Osborn, questioned the extent of Sasse’s opposition to the Affordable Care Act by highlighting speeches and articles Sasse gave both during and after the act’s passage through Congress.
The Omaha World-Herald said that the Osborn campaign was “intent on questioning whether Sasse is a true conservative.” A 2009 Bloomberg Businessweek Sasse essay headlined “Health-Care Reform: The Rush to Pass a Bad Bill” (which said, “There’s an emerging consensus that this [an individual mandate] might be a good idea”) was highlighted by the Osborn campaign.
On January 6, 2015, Sasse took the oath of office as a member of the US Senate.
Sasse was one of 16 senators who voted against legislation in February 2019 that would have prevented a partial government shutdown and provided $1.375 billion for obstacles, including 55 miles of wall, along the U.S.-Mexico border.
Sasse was one of twelve senators that cosponsored a motion in March 2019 that would impose a constitutional amendment restricting the number of justices on the Supreme Court to nine. Several Democratic presidential candidates indicated that they would be amenable to expanding the Supreme Court’s membership, which prompted the introduction of the resolution.
