Ransone played Tate in the drama Ken Park, directed by Larry Clark, in 2002. He appeared as Ziggy Sobotka in twelve episodes of The Wire in 2003. He played bank robber Steve-O in Spike Lee’s 2006 heist film Inside Man. He played Cpl. Josh Ray Person in the 2008 miniseries Generation Kill.
He was given a recurring role in the comedy How to Make It in America on HBO in 2010. The following year, he had an appearance in the drama series Treme on HBO. He acted in the play Starlet in 2012. He played Damon Callis in the drama series Low Winter Sun on AMC the following year.
After that, Ransone starred as Deputy So-and-So in the 2012 horror film Sinister, joined the cast of the Western film In a Valley of Violence in June 2014, starred off-Broadway in Small Engine Repair in 2014, had a supporting role in the comedy-drama film Tangerine in 2015, returned as the main character in the 2015 sequel Sinister 2, and played Eddie Arceneaux in the second season of the drama series Bosch in 2016.
