Xhekaj was not chosen in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) 2017 Priority Selection draft because of his very small stature while playing minor ice hockey with the Hamilton Huskies of Alliance Hockey. Only two of his team’s eligible players were not picked, which he described as “pretty tough.” He was thinking about giving up hockey, but his parents pushed him to keep playing.
The Kitchener Rangers scouting staff became interested in Xhekaj while he was a member of the St. Catharines Falcons of the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League (GOJHL).
