Career

During the Richard Nixon Administration, Cheney started his political career in 1969 as an intern for Congressman William A. Steiger. Then, from 1969 to 1970, he worked for Donald Rumsfeld, who was the Director of the Office of Economic Opportunity. In the years that followed, he had a number of jobs, including Deputy Assistant to the President from 1974 to 1975, Assistant Director of the Cost of Living Council from 1971 to 1973, and White House Staff Assistant in 1971. In a memo to Rumsfeld as deputy assistant, Cheney proposed a number of options, including the use of the U.S.

Justice Department, which the Ford administration could use to lessen the impact of a New York Times article by investigative reporter Seymour Hersh that revealed U.S. Navy submarines had intercepted Soviet underwater communications as part of Operation Ivy Bells, a highly classified program.

From December 1974 to November 1975, Cheney served as Gerald Ford’s assistant to the president and deputy chief of staff at the White House. Cheney succeeded Rumsfeld as White House Chief of Staff after Rumsfeld was appointed Secretary of Defense. Later on, he managed Ford’s 1976 presidential campaign.
