Career
Hayek received the TVyNovelas Award for Best Debut Actress for her debut on-screen role in the 1988 television series Un Nuevo Amanecer. Hayek, who was 23 at the time, was later chosen by Televisa to play the lead in Teresa (1989–1991), a popular Mexican telenovela that helped her become well-known in her home country. She won the 1990 TVyNovelas Award for Best Female Revelation for the two-year, 125-episode series.
After Teresa ended, Hayek relocated to Los Angeles in 1991, determined to pursue a career in Hollywood filmmaking. She quickly enrolled in English courses and studied acting under Stella Adler despite having dyslexia and little English proficiency .
Hayek was cast opposite Antonio Banderas in 1995 in the lead part of a self-assured and feisty Carolina in her breakthrough movie, Desperado, by Robert Rodriguez and his co-producer and then-wife, Elizabeth Avellan. Hayek described the process of making the movie as “grueling,” saying she had to try out for the role multiple times before she was cast, and that a love scene in the script was especially challenging for her to shoot since she didn’t want to be naked on camera.
At one point, she said, “It took eight hours [to film] instead of an hour”. With a $7 million budget, Desperado made $25.4 million in the US and was a financial triumph. After that, Rodriguez had a brief appearance as a vampire queen in the cult horror movie From Dusk to Dawn (1996), when she did an erotic snake dance on a table. She also starred in the police comedy Fled and the drama Follow Me Home in 1996.

Hayek was chosen to star in Angelina Jolie’s next movie Without Blood, which is based on Alessandro Baricco’s best-selling Italian novel, in June 2022. It was shot in Basilicata, Apulia, and Rome. Demián Bichir and Hayek will co-star in the movie.
She made an appearance as herself in the Netflix anthology Black Mirror’s “Joan Is Awful” episode in 2023.
