Career
When Jones was eight years old, he started playing organized ice hockey with local teams in Denver and traveling teams. He participated with three separate Colorado minor ice hockey teams in the 2005, 2006, and 2007 Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournaments. When Jones was twelve, he and his family returned to Texas.
He made the decision to play for the US National Team Development Program (NTDP) at the same time. He scored 33 points in 31 games while playing with the Dallas Stars Bantam Major club. Jones was chosen eleventh overall by the Everett Silvertips in the 2009 Bantam draft.
Although he was expected to be selected higher in the draft, he was chosen lower because of worries that he would prefer playing collegiate hockey to the Western Hockey League (WHL). Jones joined the NTDP after spending another season in Dallas with the Stars U-18 squad following his draft selection.
Jones played for the NTDP’s under-17 and under-18 teams during his debut season. He was the U-17 team’s co-captain. Jones scored 21 points in 37 games during the NTDP season, which featured games against division II and III National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) teams, international play, and league action in the United States Hockey League (USHL). He led the club in defense scoring with 21 points.
The following season, he remained co-captain but dropped to second on the team’s defensive scoring list with 31 points in 52 games. Jones had to decide after his second season whether to play with the Silvertips in the WHL or in the NCAA during his draft year.
