Career
In 2015, Furey claimed that his work with Team Broken Earth “left me with a want and desire to do more” and that this sparked his initial interest in going into politics. As early as 2017, there were rumors that Furey was being considered to succeed incumbent Premier Dwight Ball.
As soon as Ball announced his impending resignation in February 2020, Furey emerged as a possible candidate and was considered the front-runner to take his place. On March 3, 2020, in St. John’s, Furey declared his intention to run for the Newfoundland and Labrador Liberal Party leadership , and the majority of Ball’s cabinet quickly endorsed him. With around two-thirds of the votes polled, he was chosen head of the party in its convention on August 3, 2020. Furey and his provincial cabinet were formally sworn in as Premier on August 19, 2020.
On September 7, 2020, Furey declared that he will run in the by-election for Ball’s former seat of Humber-Gros Morne, since he did not have a seat in the legislature. Furey won the Humber-Gros Morne by-election on October 6, 2020.
In order to secure a more powerful mandate in the form of a majority administration, Furey requested permission from Lieutenant Governor Judy Foote on January 15, 2021, to dissolve the House of Assembly and hold an election. A COVID-19 outbreak in St. John’s compelled Elections NL to move to a mail-in election, canceling in-person voting for all districts. The election was initially set for February 13, 2021.
