Career
In the 2002 AFL draft, Selwood was selected by the Brisbane Lions with the 19th overall pick from Sandhurst. He didn’t play in 2003 or 2004, but in Round 1, 2005, he made his AFL debut for the Lions against St Kilda whilst wearing the number 28 guernsey. He was mostly used as a tagging player on important opposing players due to his stamina and responsible style of play.
Selwood was rendered unconscious in a collision with Richmond’s Alex Rance on May 9, 2009.
The Brisbane Lions delisted Selwood after the 2010 campaign.
In an attempt to revive his AFL career, Selwood was said to be returning to his home state of Victoria and joining the Geelong Football Club on October 1, 2010. Selwood was supposed to balance working for Geelong and playing for the Cats in the VFL while finishing his commerce degree. In season 2012, he aspired to play in the AFL. He was named the Geelong VFL team’s co-captain at the start of the 2011 campaign.
At Melbourne’s Docklands Stadium, Selwood guided the Geelong Cats’ VFL team to a premiership on September 23, 2012, after they defeated Port Melbourne by 33 points. At the conclusion of the 2013 season, he announced his retirement from VFL football.
